A few years ago, I contributed an essay to a book about running. It was called Die Philosophie des Laufens (The Philosophie of Running) and published by Mairisch, a small independent press with excellent taste and the kind of literary courage that larger houses often like to claim for themselves. In January, Mairisch got in touch with me about something unexpected. Diogenes — one of the most established and respected publishers in the German-speaking world — wanted to include my essay in an anthology. The book would be called Lauf und davon — Geschichten vom Jogging (Run and Away — Stories of Jogging). Of course I said yes. It felt like one of those decisions you make instantly, happily, almost casually, without fully understanding what is actually happening. The Experience of Being Alive in a Running Body Only today did it really land. My contributor’s copy arrived in the mail, and suddenly the whole thing became real in the most physical, unmistakable way. There it was: my name, my text — Im Takt, aus dem …

A while ago, a friend of mine told me she wanted to start running – and asked if I had any tips. That got me thinking: wait, didn’t I write something about that ages ago? And yes, I did. Ten years ago, to be exact. Back then, I had just gone through the ups and downs of learning how to run – the excitement, the injuries, the first few kilometers that felt like marathons. So I wrote down what had helped me. Now that question from my friend gave me a great excuse to take another look: How much of it still holds up today? What would I change, knowing what I know now? Here’s the result: ten very personal tips for beginners – tried, tested, updated, and translated into English. 1. Prepare Yourself »Forgive me for stating the obvious, but the world is made up of all kinds of people.« Haruki Murakami: »What I Talk About When I Talk About Running« By reading this article, you’ve practically already taken the first step.
New Year’s resolutions are a curious thing. Lucky for me, I don’t really need them to aim for more or less in my life. For instance, I don’t have to push myself to exercise; it’s such a natural part of my daily routine that it’s not even necessary. But of course, I have goals and desires too. Like running pain-free – after nearly two years of a nagging Achilles tendon. Or building strength – after tearing my bicep tendon last fall, it’s not just a wish, but a necessity. So, my New Year’s resolutions are more like commitments to change. To be more mindful in my training. To eat more attentively. To mix up my sports routine. And now, with January almost over, I’m starting to see some results. Running feels effortless on some days. Even after intense spinning sessions, I barely feel any muscle soreness. And my Achilles tendon? It’s calmed down, hardly sensitive to pressure anymore, and the usual pain in the ball of my foot has vanished. But here’s what really fascinates …

I don’t want to run like this anymore. It’s not doing me any good. More than that: it’s jeopardizing my health. I’m jeopardizing my health. And my joy of running is at risk too. I owe this realization to a gadget, not my own insight. But let’s start from the beginning. I’ve got something like a morning routine. It’s not the same every day, especially the order isn’t set, but it usually includes the same things. Making coffee, meditating, filling out my Whoop journal from the previous day. Then I check the Whoop app to see how I’m feeling. I know what you’re thinking. I should know that intuitively, by tuning in. But even though I consider myself intuitive in many ways, I’m also really good at ignoring my body’s signals. That’s where Whoop helps me. And again and again, on days when I least expect it, this little gadget on my wrist tells me I’m not well-rested. Quite the opposite, actually. And that I should take it easy. Now, it can happen that on …

In the world of running, trends come and go, but some have the power to shape the future of the sport. From the growing focus on recovery and self-care to the controversial debate around trail running and mega events, there is no shortage of topics to explore. In this interview with ChatGPT*, a cutting-edge AI language model, we delve into the latest trends and hot-button issues in running, and discuss the potential impact of technology on performance optimization.
Have you ever had an idea while you were running? If so, you’re not alone. Like taking a shower or going for a walk, running is one of those activities that stimulate creativity. «The hours we spend on our feet have a way of unlocking ideas that would otherwise be out of reach,» so it says in a text about the «Tracksmith Fellowship». The independent running brand from New England has designed this program to support runners with creative ambitions. But why? The answer is as striking as it’s obvious: «Our sport is rich with stories waiting to be told—stories that have the power to both inspire the next generation and grow the sport. And yet, despite this wealth of stories and ideas, it’s hard for new voices and new creators to break out.» Therefore, Tracksmith has funded six projects ranging from podcasts to sculpture, film, photography, music and urban design in 2021, and this year they support a new cohort of Fellows and their five projects. «Our sport is rich with stories waiting to …

I was just having my first cup of coffee in the morning, when an article on sprudge.com popped up in my feed reader. As an asthmatic and coffee enthusiast it naturally caught my attention. It reports about a study by medical professionals from Korea’s Hallym University, Hanyang University, and Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital, with research finding that moderate coffee consumption can lower the frequency of symptoms associated with asthma. As might be expected from this quote, the effects of coffee would not be useful in treating an asthma attack— coffee is more preventative than treatment. But in addition, «caffeine has several therapeutic effects that also reduces respiratory muscle fatigue». So all in all, good news, don’t you think?

»Running on vacation has always been a way for me to explore places I might not otherwise get a chance to see.« Lela Moore: »Running in Cuba« Wer für ein paar Kilometer auf der Malecón seine Schuhe schnürt, muss höllisch aufpassen.

»Design a marathon training plan? Entirely by myself? It felt audacious. Brazen. Saucy! Was I up to the task? Was the student really ready to assume the role of master?« Mark Remy: »Hills. Fartleks. Beer.« …
